DISCOVER LA PALMA’S HIGHEST HIKING TRAIL AT ROQUE DE LOS MUCHACHOS
On the highest peak of La Palma, offering breathtaking panoramic views and an unforgettable sea of clouds, lies the Roque de Los Muchachos (2,426 m). It is considered one of the best places in the world for astronomical observation, and for this reason, it houses one of the most comprehensive arrays of telescopes internationally.
From the Roque de Los Muchachos viewpoint, we’ll take the GR-131, also known as “El Bastón,” skirting the ridge of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. The route begins with a significant incline that gradually decreases as we pass near a cluster of telescopes, allowing us to observe these unique scientific installations. We’ll enjoy breathtaking views throughout the hike, particularly those of the Caldera itself, one of the world’s largest erosion craters and a geological treasure.
Along the summit trail, we find diverse vegetation such as cedars, broom, gorse, mountain pansies, and viper’s bugloss, whose spring bloom adds further charm to the landscape, filling the island’s peak with a multitude of colors. The path crosses a basalt rock face, Roberto’s Wall, the subject of a unique legend.
North of the Caldera de Taburiente, the sensation of floating in the void intensifies. We are at the Mirador de Los Andenes viewpoint, from where the entire Las Angustias ravine can be seen. From here, the trail winds its way around the various obstacles presented by the terrain to reach the Pico de La Cruz peak, a vantage point that, on clear days, allows us to see El Hierro, La Gomera, and Tenerife.

Walking towards the sky of La Isla Bonita is a gift for the senses, because La Palma is much more than a volcano.
The Roque de los Muchachos is located at the highest point on the island of La Palma, at 2,426 meters above sea level. It’s an incredible place where nature and astronomy come together, as it also houses the Roque de Los Muchachos Astrophysical Observatory (ORM), one of the most important telescope arrays in the world.
La Palma, thanks to its clear and dark skies, which also have special protection, the Sky Law, is one of the places with the best skies in the world for astronomical observation.
With our transfer service, we’ll take you directly to Roque de los Muchachos, where you’ll have a privileged view of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, a vast erosive caldera some 1,500 meters deep, covered in pine forest and crisscrossed by intricate ravines. This is a must-see for anyone visiting the island. Its panoramic views and the lush, picturesque vegetation, mainly broom and gorse, create an unforgettable scene, especially during the flowering season. Furthermore, from there you can usually see the neighboring islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro on the horizon.
Once our transfer drops you off at the island’s highest point, you can enjoy several hiking trails. We recommend walking along the rim of La Caldera on the GR 131, taking in the incredible views above the clouds. The contrast between the telescopes and the surrounding nature is truly striking.
With this hiking option, you can start at the Roque de Los Muchachos viewpoint, walk past several of the Telescopios (a local landmark), enjoy the views from Pico de la Fuente Nueva, or see along the way how cedars, broom, and pansies are some of the few survivors that have managed to overcome the extreme hostility of the environment. A little further on, we find the so-called Pared de Roberto (Roberto’s Wall), which legend attributes to the hand of the devil. And at the Mirador de Los Andenes (Los Andenes Viewpoint), where the road is once again within reach, after about an hour and a half, the sensation of floating in mid-air is almost surreal. If you want to continue along the trail, the small ascents and descents are continuous on this stretch until you reach Pico de La Cruz, which is about 5 kilometers from the start (approximately two hours). And if you are a more experienced hiker, you can even reach Pico de La Nieve (2,232 m) (10 km and approximately 4 hours). Please note that you will need to make a slight detour to reach the summit. Afterwards, you will have to backtrack to descend to the main road junction, where our transfer will be waiting for you at the scheduled time.
There are several pick-up points for our transfer. Please check the pick-up times before deciding whether to proceed to the next point!
