EXPERIENCE LA PALMA’S MOST ICONIC VOLCANIC HIKING ADVENTURE
One of La Palma’s most popular routes, renowned for its beauty and scenic richness, is undoubtedly the Volcano Route. This spectacular 17-km volcanic trail offers a glimpse into the island’s recent geological history. It was once an important communication route between different regions of La Palma. The well-maintained and signposted trail begins at the El Pilar Refuge, located in the municipality of El Paso, in the center of the island, and winds through the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park before reaching the municipality of Fuencaliente.
Exploring the Volcano Route is the best way to discover the most volcanic part of the island, enjoying landscapes that seem straight out of science fiction and even evoke a virtual stroll across Mars. You’ll also enjoy incredible panoramic views of both sides of La Palma and, depending on the day, you might even catch a glimpse of one of the other three islands in the province: Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro. The combination of the green pine forest with the different hues of the volcanic terrain is truly breathtaking and well worth the effort.
During the Volcano Route tour, our guide will tell you about the history of volcanism on the island through a landscape of lava, ash, calderas and volcanic eruptions that are interspersed with the characteristic green of the Canary pine as you cross the youngest area of the island, formed by several volcanoes, which is part of the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park.
This is a tough route, so you will need to be in good physical condition to complete its 17 kilometers from the El Pilar Refuge to Los Canarios (Fuencaliente), the southernmost municipality on the island, as well as bring suitable footwear, sun protection, water and food for the whole way.

After picking you up at your designated stop, our transfer will head to Refugio El Pilar, the starting point of this route that follows the legendary GR-131 trail. The trail climbs steeply from the very beginning, skirting around Pico Birigoyo. From this vantage point, you can admire the Aridane Valley, the Caldera de Taburiente, and in the distance, Roque de Los Muchachos, the highest point on the island of La Palma.
As we continue up the trail through Canary Island pines, we’ll also see the towns of El Paso, Los Llanos de Aridane, and Tazacorte. We keep climbing to reach the Hoyo Negro crater, from where, on a clear day, we can also see the other neighboring islands, as well as other points on La Palma such as Santa Cruz de La Palma and Los Cancajos. In this area, depending on the weather, we might even experience a walk among the clouds, thanks to the blanket of white that forms.
Hoyo Negro marks the beginning of the many craters we’ll encounter along this magical Volcano Route on the island of La Palma. After reaching Las Deseadas, the highest point of the route, a challenging descent begins. The black volcanic sand will likely end up in our boots more than once during the descent, but one look up will be enough to realize that the beauty of the trail is well worth the effort.
Led by our guide, we’ll continue past historical eruptions until we reach the picturesque Martín Volcano, one of the last craters we’ll see before the end of our guided tour. Martín Volcano is characterized by its impressive reddish cone, which is quite striking from afar.
Next, now among pine forests, we’ll descend towards Los Canarios (Fuencaliente), where our transfer will be waiting to take us back to our starting point. You’ll certainly take away some unforgettable memories and photos, both in your mind and on your camera.
